There are other details that you will need to coordinate with these four main areas, like invitations, food, and music, but nailing down the details on the primary four will make every other decision much easier.
Color Scheme
The color scheme of your wedding is the first choice you will need to make. If you want a Disney themed fairy-tale wedding, think about the main color scheme of the movie you want to emulate.
- A Beauty and the Beast wedding would feature a rich golden yellow, royal blue, and a scarlet rose red.
- An Aladdin wedding would have a turquoise blue, golden yellow, with accents of garnet red.
- Sleeping Beauty would have a medium rose pink, along with other pastels.
- A Tangled/Rapunzel wedding would include a medium purple, and starbursts of gold.
- A Cinderella wedding would feature powder blue, silver, and pale pink.
If you are after a more generalized fairy-tale style wedding, then you will have a different set of rules to follow with your color scheme. Stick to colors in pastel shades. Muted colors with a powdery finish achieve the fairy-tale look best.
So, if you want purple to be one of your colors, instead of choosing an amethyst or lilac shade, choose a shade of lavender. Instead of choosing rose, choose blush.
If you had your heart set on a color or two that doesn’t follow this rule, don’t worry (this is your wedding after all!). Just try to pick an accent color that looks good with your choice that has a powdery finish, and your color choices will still look like they were plucked straight out of a fairy tale.
Lighting
Your lighting choices will set the mood and tone for your wedding. Fairy-tale wedding take advantage of creative lighting in a big way. Fairy lights and flickering candles (real or artificial) should make up the majority of your lighting.
Your chosen venue will determine how much control you have over lighting. An indoor location will give you the most control because you will be able to either turn off or dim the overhead lighting and replace it with your own fairy lights and candles.
An outdoor wedding, unless held in the evening, will have less freedom. The other outdoor alternative is to hold the ceremony and reception in a wooded, shady area. Fairy lights in the woods will have to be the LED variety, and battery-powered flickering candles would be a great choice as well.
If time is on your side, shop for your fairy lights during the after Christmas clearance sales. Choose the white strands, instead of the green to better match your décor.
Get creative when planning where you will hang your lights. Wrapping and twisting fairy lights with white tulle will soften the lighting, as well as give a romantic ambience.
LED fairy lights in mason jars, or in shallow bowls or vases look whimsical on reception tables.
There’s no doubt about it, fairy lights and flickering candles will give your wedding a powerful dose of fairy-tale magic.
Flowers
When you are choosing your flowers, refer back to your original color scheme in order to stay true to your vision.
Again, Disney themed fairy-tale wedding flowers will look different than general fairy tale flowers, so I will offer tips separately.
If you are going with a Disney themed fairy-tale, think back to your movie of choice, and try to remember if there are any flowers or flower references from which to draw your inspiration.
- Beauty and the Beast had red roses
- Aladdin had white jasmine
- Sleeping Beauty had pink roses
- Tangled/Rapunzel had multi-colored daisies
If you have chosen the general fairy-tale, then choose flowers within your color scheme, but also think of the shape of the arrangements. Fairy-tale shapes are long and trailing.
Your florist will be able to assist you in choosing the right flowers and greenery, but you may want to include some seeded eucalyptus, creeping jenny, and sprays of white jasmine.
Don’t forget to weave a few flowers into the bridal hairstyle for the ultimate fairy-tale look.
Other flowers to consider including are: baby’s breath, white and pale pink spray roses (also called fairy roses), and some powdery succulents.
Attire
Think ultra-romantic when making attire selections. This is going to have more to do with the cut of the garments and fabrics than anything else.
Long dresses, with full, draping skirts have the right look. Whimsical, fine lace announces a fairy-tale dress better than almost any other fabric.
The groom and groomsmen clothes will be more difficult to squeeze into fairy-tale mode, but not impossible. Color choices may be the best way to achieve a look that complements the rest of the bridal party here. A light or medium gray suit will coordinate better than a stark black tuxedo.
When you are planning out your fairy-tale wedding, always consult your primary four choices to ensure a compatible look and feel. Your fairy-tale wedding will be an affair that your guests will always remember, and you will get to fulfill one of your childhood dreams.
